Default Re: Auto categorization..why does it fail?

FWIW ,

I researched and found a resolution. I had to move my bank account from B of
A to Wachovia. I also had to move from Money to Quicken. Here's why.

Wachovia does not place it's reference numbers on the same line of the
register transation as the Payee. So only the Payee name is read by the
software. Wachovia customers are not bothered by the issue, conqsequently,
of their software'sd auto-categorization feature not working. Furthermore,
Wachovia provides download files in QFX format. Money does not read QFX
format.. So I had to buy Quicken 2005 which only reads QFX.

A few days research, a lot of phone calls. But problem resolved.

Default Auto categorization..why does it fail?

I use Money 2003

Can anybody confirm what I was just told by my bank about Money ( and
Quicken)

Just got off the phone with Bank of America tech support. He told me that
recent Money and Quicken programs have the auto-categorization feature but
it doen not work for B of A customers. Auto-categorization is designed to
enable program to automaticially assign the proper category to the payees so
that this does not have to be done manually for each transaction in
somebodys monthly check register download.

However....

The B of A Tech said that the presence of transaction tracking dates and
numbers in the register prevents this important feature from working .Most B
of A customers, he claims, have to manually assign categories every month
regardless of what software they are using. (. He admitted must do so
himself each month for his personal B. of A.check register in Quicken. ) The
transaction tracking numbers are never the same and are always on the same
line as the payee name.Consequently the auto-categorization feature reads
each payee line as new and distinct payee in each register and hence cannot
auto-assign a category. See example of how two typical transactions read in
the QIF file download:

Example:

Safeway Store #125 12/15 #000123456 $15.95

Safeway Store #125 12/17 #000987654 $10.95

What a complete pain. There must be a better way. Anybody know how to work
around this? Can anybody confirm that what the tech said is correct?
