| Aha. Incompatible Versions. The FAQ: --- Q): Why do I get the "incompatible versions" message when upgrading my data file? A): This problem arises from trying to convert a file from one localized version (say Money UK) to another (say Money US.) The workaround it to export accounts using QIF and re-import them. The fix is to obtain a newer localized version for the same country as your original data file. | I'm sure it wasn't a question of writing XP to support Money2000. Money versions for a very long time have been sufficiently carefully designed to limit use of APIs to the core Win32 API set that is more or less common from Win95 (aka "dirty Windows") to today's XP. Thus, Money has worked more or less (the prime issues always being user permissions/profiles) on WinNT and its successors as far back as there has been an NT. It was never supported, but it always pretty much worked. I know. I've run Money since v.2 and NT since v. 3.1. | It's not impossible. This tells me that 2000 will run on XP because it, like Windows 2000, for example, uses the NT kernal. I'm surprised but MS could write XP to support Money 2000 if it wanted to. I know it can coexist in a different directory/folder. Money 2000 runs fine on XP. You need to run it in an administrator> you'd need it on an older OS (Win 98, Me, etc.) on a SEPARATE computer since > you've already put Money 2003 on your new hard drive. account. It can coexist with Money 2003 if you install it into a different directory/folder. The last-installed version will have the file associations for QIF etc. |

| I would suggest calling around to a LOT of computer shops. I would also contact Microsoft. You could possibly find an old computer somewhere with Money 2000 installed (make sure its the exact version you had before). You could quite possibly RENT one. Microsoft might be willing to sell you a copy cheap. Remember, Money 2000 almost certainly won't run on Windows XP. Therefore, you'd need it on an older OS (Win 98, Me, etc.) on a SEPARATE computer since you've already put Money 2003 on your new hard drive. Once you have this, you could restore form backup on the machine with Money 2000 installed. Then, Money would create the .mny source file you need. Once you have that, you could copy the Money 2000 .mny onto your new machine. This is the file that Money 2003 could successfully update to a Money 2003 .mny file. What you want to do is doable but it will take some effort and possibly spending a little but its worth it since we are talking about your financial files. Alternatively, there are places with the expertise to possibly retrieve the Money 2000 .mny file off of the hard drive that failed--if you still have that hard drive lying around. I hope this helps. You did not say what error you were getting. Incompatible version,> install Money 200 on the new drive and my Money 2000 cd must be damaged > as it wouldn't install. > So I went and bought Money 2003 that installed no problems but it won't > allow me to restore my backup Money file from the older version 2000. > Can anyone help as I'm really getting desperate and can't seem to locate > an old version of Money 2000 to buy to install so that I can recover my > data. write protected, not a Money file, corrupted? Is that a backup on floppies? If so, I would copy each file from the backup floppies to the same directory/folder. This will give you an extra backup and will separate any problems of reading the floppy media from some other potential problem. This is not the common way, and it is not usually necessary. But especially if it is my only backup, I would consider the copy to hard disk step. The files will be named *d1.mbf, *d2.mbf, *d3.mbf and so on. In WE, double click the *d1.mbf file. That should launch Money and start the restore. When Money prompts for the next diskette, click OK. If you are restoring directly from floppy diskette, you can insert the first floppy and double click the *d1.mbf file. Change diskettes when prompted. You will have a chance to change the location or filename for where the restored data will go. If this is a different computer, it is especially good to browse to a location. The old location may not even exist. |

| Hi My system had a major crash and needed a new hard drive. Went to install Money 200 on the new drive and my Money 2000 cd must be damaged as it wouldn't install. So I went and bought Money 2003 that installed no problems but it won't allow me to restore my backup Money file from the older version 2000. Can anyone help as I'm really getting desperate and can't seem to locate an old version of Money 2000 to buy to install so that I can recover my data. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
