That's getting hard if the machine ****ever**** goes on the net. I'm not
saying I think the risk is high or the threat major, just assuring it's 0 is
hard.

If it's a shared machine or an employer's or something I don't think you can
get there. Security requires you have control over the hardware from womb to
tomb. Ask the Dons who have been brought down by the FBI.

Thanks Dick. I'm more concerned about key loggers and spyware than people
"getting into" my computer, I have a hardware and Software firewall
installed. While nothing is 100% I'd like to get as close as I can.

Also, thanks to everyone else for your responses, your help is appreciated.

I don't understand why you want to install Money on the CF. I also think
you'll see some performance issues unless it's a fast CF.

The Data Is The Thing. Worry security and integrity of the .MNY data file.
That's where your data is. It's not anywhere else. (Well, there is one
exception--things like your printer preferences and your Tools|Options
settings are in the system registry. There's no way around that one--but
there's no financial data there, either.)

The application is not at risk as long as you don't loose the CD. Further,
since I sense you are worried about privacy of your data, worrying the Money
install is of no benefit. Finally, some applications have bad karma
installed on removable media because of all of the system level
modifications for the install. (Registry and what not.) You may find that
some apps just won't install that way. You could try it. But I'm thinking it
would be more problems than it would ever be worth.

Your backup scheme should meet some key tests:

1) Independent media is a must--a backup stored on the same media as the
file you are trying to protect is just barely better than no backup
2) Independent media type(s) is also good
3) Tested periodically to prove they are
4) Backups still need backups
5) Keeping some backups off site is a good idea as well

User data goes in .MNY files and you specify how many and where they go.
That's pretty localized and completely under your control.

What if I deleted money all together and then installed it on a compact
flash card, and ran it from there removing the CF card when not in use.
Still backing up my money file to a zip disk, or just all on the CF card.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Al

You can store all of your data by purely moving the .MNY file onto the ZIP
drive - Money can use it from there. However, ZIP drives are not as fast as
USB keys, and i've seen one Money file get corrupted due to the latency on a
ZIP drive, so I (personally) would use USB instead of ZIP.

I do not respond to any unsolicited email regarding Money

Note money 2005 now creates a temp file on the disk every time you

I use a program called "Cryptainer" which, as it's name suggests, provides
an encrypted container (file) that, when loaded, appears like an extra drive
in Windows. I store my mny files on this drive so it's just a matter of
opening the cryptainer volume and double clicking on the mny file to open
it. I also back up the encrypted volume daily, when unmounted it appears
just like a normal file, so that avoids the problem of unencrypted backups
of the Money file.

It's the neatest way I've found of encrypting Money files.

There's a free version (limited to 20MB of data) available on their web site
at www.cypherix.com

You would be better off installing a second hard drive than running Money
off a zip drive. Backing up to the zip drive is one thing, and I would not
discourage that practice, but run your working file off of it, would not be
good idea.

I back up to second hard drive, and then I copy the file to a USB mass
storage device I purchased from Staples for about $18.00 after rebates. I
also keep a copy on my laptop's hard drive.

Default Running Money From a Zip drive

Hi,
I was wondering if there is a way to run money 2003 from a source other than
my hard drive. I'm not fond of the fact that it stores my financial data all
over the hard drive, as well as where I have my back ups directed to. I'd
really prefer to either run money from a source I can disconnect until I
need to use it. I'd really like to keep my records off the hard drive or,
encrypt or hide them. That is the only real personal data I have on my
computer.

If this can't be done with money, can someone suggest a program that will
allow me to do this?

Thanks for your time,
Al
