Default Re: Any bundles available for M05 w/TaxCut and Norton?

If you look under TaxCut instead of Money Deluxe on Amazon, you will see a
whole section on bundled offers. The Norton/Symantec Bundle offer is given
by TaxCut and not by Microsoft, so it isn't listed with the Money program.
Here is a link to all the offers that TaxCut has out, to include with Money
2005.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...304483-7350434

With this, you can get Money 2005 Deluxe for $8 after the $40 rebate, and
Norton Internet Security for $2 after two rebates, plus no tax, no shipping.
It is a much better deal than CompUSA provided.

This isn't the appropriate newsgroup for Norton, but I've found that many
manufacturers' stores (including Symantec, the maker of Norton products)
frequently offer bundles that are unavailable elsewhere.

In addition, I rarely need to mail rebates anymore since discovering that
many manufacturers like Adobe and Symantec take the price of the rebate
($30 or more) off up front when you upgrade through their respective
stores (http://store.adobe.com and http://www.symantecstore.com).
Moreover, a recent purchase at Symantec’s store included a free download
of another product, Norton Password Manager, as well as $30 off up front
for upgrading.

To no one's surprise, Money 2005 "earns" a whopping 1.3 out of 5
stars in the 10 Customer Reviews following the product offer. Since
Microsoft used polling data to design this year's product, I wonder
if they care about this polling data.

If you get it on Amazon, there looks like some TaxCut offer there:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/re...-%2FB0002D1572

but it doesn't have Norton.

Watch the deals in January. The will most likely have a deal where
you can buy TaxCut and get Money free. Check stores like Staples in
particular, they have that deal every year.

I think you analysis is basically correct, depressing though it is, but
offer the following comments/suggestions:

1) If Microsoft gets even a dime, it encourages them; even if you elect not
to use the package. Granted, you will very likely be able to get Money
effectively free in the bundle you are searching for.

2) You might want to try the trial version first before deciding it's
nothing more than a relatively harmless lateral move if you don't use the
Yodlee stuff. Lots of things are moved hither and yon. The UI is a lot
busier and somewhat chaotic. It mangles existing categories upon upgrade. It
removes existing features--that you may or may not use. Many people find it
slower. It makes some arbitrary changes like how it does its quick update to
a 401k. I could go on. I do share your concern over future supportability
staying on M04. I'm investigating alternatives on an ongoing basis. None of
them are good, so far.

Actually, I bet I don't spend much more time in the app average per day than
you do. Now, activity in the newsgroup is another matter...

I appreciate (as always) your input in this forum, Dick, as well as your
yeoman work maintaining the UMPM FAQ. I don't use a .Net/Passport account
with my MSMoney installation, and don't intend to do it now to use the
Yodlee features. (As an aside, I use Yodlee, but its integration into M05
is just sloppy - why not leverage existing Yodlee accounts, and treat them
as just another FI source, rather than the whole ridiculous MSN tie...)

After watching the traffic here, M05 seems like a lateral upgrade, in that
does little actual harm if you're not using the MSN/Yodlee integration. I
understand that this is not a wonderful upgrade, but remaining on M04
essentially sidetracks us - removing what little customer support MS
provides.

Getting the package (essentially) free allows me to take my time and
evaluate whether there's a way to make it work for me. I live in MSMoney
for about 15 mins a day, and can easily ignore most of the new annoying ad
channels, if the overall utility is there (maintaining transactions and
balances, etc...). I know you spend far more time with the package than
that, and I appreciate your disappointment with the direction of the
product.

From a market analysis view, though, they have only two ways to drive
revenue - sales and ads - and since their not building an enterprise level
accounting package, ads are a more stable way to generate revenue than
sales. I haven't paid more than a few dollars for any version of Money
since 2000 (when I switched to TaxCut). I honestly don't think that many of
the folks here (including many of the serious users) would pay $100 annually
for the feature set in M04 even if you add everything in your wish list.
Without any ad channels, that's easily what MSMoney would cost as a serious
accounting package, and the first one released in that style would be the
last, because they would get $0 in revenue from it (to one significant
figure). This is going to be a low cost - likely free to most end users -
package, paid for largely by advertising. Frankly, that's the model I think
most end users have voted for already with their wallets.

Thanks for your reply, and all your work - I will do another round of
research before I buy, and I may well end where you are, but for now, I'm
just window shopping for any deals.

- John

Before you decide M05 is the right answer to any question, read posts and
consider reviewing http://umpmfaq.info/Money2005.htm. If you get it for
free, you might conclude, as others have, that it cost too much.

Default Any bundles available for M05 w/TaxCut and Norton?

I just googled and found a CompUSA bundle that expired yesterday (my timing
is as good as ever...). I'm going to buy TaxCut anyway, and if I can get a
deal on M05 at the same time, that would be a good idea.

Can anyone reply w/a pointer to any deals currently available? Thanks!
