I had the same question a few years ago without a satifactory method that
uses the automatic stock quote update.

I ended up creating a money market account for my silver. When I make a
purchase, I can enter the quantity, price per ounce, and commission(S&H) for
the purchase. I then use the manual update feature about once a month to
update the price for the account for every Friday in that month using the
historical data from the Kitco site. I like to use the week ending spot price
since I don't care intra week prices.

I do something similiarfor my coins, with tracking of the price at month
starting prices, but it tends to average the total value since some coins
are worth more than others. I could have set up an asset account for each
coin but I wanted to treat the coins as a grouped investment.
