The only file you absolutely must have is the *.mny file. The other backup
files are *.mbf - not essential but useful.

Depending on version, the DOS version may not understand long
filenames (greater than 8.3), The short directory name would be
C:\DOCUME~1\YOURNA~1\MYDOCU~1

where "YOURNA" represents the first six non-blank characters in your

Those DIR commands from the previous postings would deal with this.

If in a newer DOS, you use a long name that contains spaces, you

I suggest checking
x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit
x Prompt me before backing up each time*
x Make my file small ...

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.

I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive also, in addition to
backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big
floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see

* This has two advantages. You can change the file name
occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money040328.
Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The
..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can
choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by
simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box.

My Harddrive just crashed but I can access the C: in DOS

What is the default directories and file names where Money 2005 stores
backup data (ie...each time I close the application)?

I would like to copy this information an install it on my new PC (along with
Money 2005).
