| You must assign the classification in the split dialog. After setting the splits and selection the classifications in the split dialog and you click "Done" you will see "Split/Multiple Categories" in the classification field. This indicates that the transaction contains splits and the splits are/might be classified. The classification entry field is the next field after the dollar amount field in the split dialog.
