At least they provide service packs for most of their other products.
Money rarely gets any sort of fixes, short of new versions (and some
would say not even then). And even when they do release patches, they
get downloaded automagically from within Money and you never get told
exactly what was supposedly fixed. Considering the disaster that is
M05, I really thought we would have some sort of client side update by
now. Maybe MS just decided to write off this release entirely.

Keep your eyes on this NG - with the number of unhappy bunnies around I
would have thought that MS would have to do something!

Ahhhh!! That's what I was afraid of. I spent Saturday and most of Sunday
catching up on 360 transactions, statements and investments.

Looks like I'm going to have to wait for version 06

Thanks, Bob.

When you converted M2005 made a backup of your .mny file at that time as
..m12.

Reinstall M2004, find the .m12 file and rename as .mny and reinput all
transactions since you converted.

I let the allure of the new, shiny product get the better of me. I updated
the program from 04 to 05, did a LOT of catch-up data entry, and now I've
discovered many of the nigling things that I'm now reading about in the
newsgroup.

A very, very silly thing that really bugs me is that I couldn't find a Home
Page icon to add to the Shortcut bar. Sure, it's a tab, but then so are
Bills and Reports and they've got a Shortcut!
Then, for the life of me, I can't keep tax categories from showing up on the
Home Page 'Spending by Category' pie chart.
Then, they removed the Update Price Manually from the right-click over an
investment (If it's good enough to be a Common Task item in the left margin,
then it should still be available as a right-click item).

While I'm at it, I've always wondered why, when you Void a withdrawal (to
represent a voided check from my checkbook), it adds $0.00 to the Deposit
column??? Shouldn't it be under the Payment column, if anything (why isn't
it called the Withdrawal column)?

Dick, I wish I had read your online review! I blew it.

So, by any chance does the 05 file import back into 04? Please say yes (and
really mean it!)

Jon

Thanks for everyone's response. From the mostly negative comments I
think I will pass. Will Microsoft ever release a product where we
don't have to wait for the first or second service pack to have it
work properly?
I hope all of you who are struggling with '05 can get your issues
worked out.

Thanks Glenn,

I'm using 2004 and have no problems with it. It does what I need it to do. I
would have upgraded just for another year of credit info services from
Experian but since we only get the credit Score now, it is not an issue
anymore.

AS a Beta tester, I would say DO NOT UPGRADE! If 2004 works, and you have no
issues with bank connections, etc then please try not to fix what is broken.
M2005 has too many issues to be warrant an upgrade from your working
version.

I think Money managers couldn't even think that QIF support, or any other
feature not related to MSN, Web, offers from partners, and the like, would
have any meaning for the users. If things like QIF support occupied 5% of
their minds, Money would be totally different product today.

Most of the major problems seem to be centered around online usage if you're
trying to upgrade from 2004. I purchased it with the hope that I would
finally be able to update from Bank of America without having to log onto
the web site and download the .ofx manually. After having 2005 continually
duplicate transactions all over the place and create a second account that I
was supposed to merge, I gave up on the online part.

What finally caused me to uninstall 2005 and go back to 2004 were three
things.

I liked my categories the way they were. Food:Groceries...
There's a blurred line between what's online and what's local.
2005 has way too much wasted screen space compared to previous versions.

In my honest opinion I think the Money 2005 program managers saw a real
opportunity to capitalize on the fact that Quicken users would be stranded
by removing QIF support in Quicken 2005. They knew they had to get a 2005
product on the shelf quickly and released something that was not completely
tested and ended up looking foolish in the eyes of both the new Quicken
converts as well as their long time Money users like myself.

It's really a shame. Finally they had a chance to pull ahead of Intuit and
blew it.

My .02.

-Bill

There are a lot of potential problems. Not everyone experiences them,
though. I tried Money 2005 for a while and didn't have any problems, but
what settled it for me was that there weren't any new features that
benefited me. So I stuck with Money 2004.

I suggest you download the trial version and try it out on your data file.
After it gets converted to 2005, check the balances on all of your accounts
to make sure they are the same as what 2004 showed. Also check your
recurring bills/deposits. Those were two common problems that affected some
people right away.

Default Upgrade to 2005 or not?

I'm running Money2004 on a WIN2K system. I was going to pick up the
latest upgrade and install it on my system unitl I started reading
some of the posts here. I've just started following this newsgroup so
I am coming to the discussion late. Would someone be kind enough to
summarize what problems have come up with Money05 so I can assess if I
want to upgrade or not.

Thanks
Mike...
