Be aware that zip files can be cracked.

You can easily put it in a zipfile with password. FYI, all minimally serious
data should always be stored offsite, that's what every company is doing.

Hi Steve,
You might want to try a 3rd party utility for backing up. You could give
Backup4all a look, http://www.backup4all.com it has a built-in support for
CD/CD-RW/DVD, can do incremental backups and also you can automatically
customize the names of the zip files resulted.

Don't think I like the idea of storing my Money data on the Internet! That's
why I don't use MSN synchronisation (apart from one or two other
problemettes!) ;-))

In addition to what Cal and Bob said: your best bet if offsite backup using
the storage your ISP (or other provider) gives you.

Money can't directly recognise a CD R/W drive. You need to backup to hard
disk and then burn it from there. The backup file is *.mbf and is a "copy"
of your *.mny file.

Backup files are always read only - think about it - you wouldn't want to
overwrite it accidentally now would you? ;-)

Make sure you have a long cycle of backup files (your naming strategy looks
good - but better to have yyyymmdd - computers sort better that way). It
can all too easy to find you have a corrupted file and the last good backup
is the one you just overwrote!!!

See FAQ available at http://umpmfaq.info/faq.html for information.

Either. The backup *.mbf file can be compressed. If you are
incrementally backing up to the same CD, I suggest the file you copy
over have a revised name so as to allow you to have different
vintages available.

In Tools-> Options-> Backup [M05: Tools-> Settings-> BackupOptions]
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit
x Prompt me before backing up each time*
x Make my file small ...

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.

I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive also, in addition to
backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big
floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see
Glyn Simpson's method at http://www.mvps.org/money/backup.htm

* This has two advantages. You can change the file name
occasionally. I like to pick a name something like 10102004.
Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The
..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can
choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by
simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box.

I copy the backup files to the CD every 2 to 4 weeks

If, when you copy the file back at a later point, you can
right-click the file with Windows Explorer to change that attribute.
I think that if you are doing a Restore from a *.mbf file, the file
could be read only.

Default Back up to CD RW

I want to back up my portfolio from Portfolio Manger to a cd rw.( Not Thru
Money) The default is the A drive which I can't seem to change. Also, Do
I back up the .mny file or the current backup I made that I call 10102004?
If I need to restore this file do I need to do anything else? It shows as a
read only file. Thanks
