Every year the reviews say the new version is not compelling enough
to switch from the previous year. The only thing that would make me
upgrade is expiration of the on-line features, which is now two years
for the deluxe instead of three like M2003. MS knows how to
perpetuate the upgrade cycle. I'll just wait until tax season from
now on and take the almost free give away of Money with TaxCut.

PCMagazine isn't the only one giving incorrect reviews of Money software...

Check out the following review from Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine:

http://www.kiplinger.com/magazine/ar...0/quicken.html

In my mind, the last two sentences sum up just how bad the review is: "But
if you're already using Money, upgrade to 2005. It's a major improvement
over 2004, and there's no sense in taking the time to switch to Quicken when
Money is nipping at its heels."

Not sure how they get major improvement out of no added features--except for
more online banks that in many cases don't sync correctly and are causing
all kinds of havoc with money files!

Nope.... Did nothing special... Popped in the CD and clicked next until
finished. I did back up my Money 2004 data files to CD first, but that was
my idea

Hi anonymous[at]discussions.microsoft.com
(anonymous[at]discussions.microsoft.com),
in the newsgroups
you posted:

|| Passport IS required for transaction updates from any of
|| the thousands of financial institutions that use the
|| Yodlee/MSN solution. You can not use the Yodlee/MSN
|| solution from within Money without Passport.

Maybe you shouldn't be so general in your statements then. You could say
that Passport is required *IF* you want to use the Yodlee/MSN solution.
However, Passport it NOT required to use Money 2005. Passport is NOT
required to download financial statements from all banks. Passport is NOT
required to use ANY of the offline features in Microsoft Money 2005.
Passport is NOT required for all online transactions.

Let me add that if anyone wants to use Passport required features, you can
obtain a free Passport at www.passport.com or follow the prompts that
Microsoft Money 2005 offers you to sign up, *IF* you desire.

Hi johnnywannaberich (anonymous[at]discussions.microsoft.com),
in the newsgroups
you posted:

|| OK Brian. Please share exactly what you have done. I
|| have been trying to get Money 2005 converted for 2
|| weeks. I'm an experienced technically minded and patient
|| person but this version is pushing me to seriously
|| consider going back to Quicken after using MS Money since
|| 2000.

I of course backed up my 2004 first, then:

1. I put the Money 2005 CD in my cd-rom drive
2. AutoRun
3. Setup detected previous version (2004) and asked if I would let the
install routine uninstall my previous version
4. I said yes.
5. Setup unintalled old and installed new without interference from me.
6. Opened Money 2005 and entered my passport password and put a check mark
next to save password.

You are correct, I do not use MSN Bill Pay. Speaking of paying bills, I went
to pay some bills tonight and found that some of my recurring bills were
missing or had changed frequency all on their own. <sigh--

Passport IS required for transaction updates from any of
the thousands of financial institutions that use the
Yodlee/MSN solution. You can not use the Yodlee/MSN
solution from within Money without Passport.

Well it is mandatory if you want to update transactions
from within Money for any financial institution that has
been saddled with the Yodlee/MSN update solution.

My findings:

1) Financial institutions that use OFX Direct Connect will
update without Passport.
2) Financial institutions that can only be updated from
within Money with the Yodlee/MSN solution will not update
without Passport:

"Online updates are the easiest, fastest way to keep on
top of your finances. To receive online updates for
accounts at this bank or brokerage, change your Money
settings. Your new settings will also let you work with
your Money information from any computer that's connected
to the Internet. To skip online updates, update your
accounts manually by typing in transactions.

To change your settings so you can use online updates for
this bank or brokerage, click Next."

OK Brian. Please share exactly what you have done. I
have been trying to get Money 2005 converted for 2
weeks. I'm an experienced technically minded and patient
person but this version is pushing me to seriously
consider going back to Quicken after using MS Money since
2000.

I was finally able to get Money to convert my original
file. Thank God for having more than one back up. I
have found that this seems to be necessary since there
also seem to be many corruptions that take place. The
only way I was able to do this though was to completely
remove Passport from my Money file in Money 2003. Then re-
install M05.

When I was ready to start synchronizing my information on
MSN, I of course chose the option to keep my accounts in
my money file. What happened to being able to match up
the accounts like Money 2003???? I felt that was
absurd. I re added the accounts for the various banks to
MSN Money only to find the accounts duplicated in my
money file. AHHH!!! Of course merging was a complete
failure as well, as it kept the trans actions on MSN but
deleted the previous 4 yrs of data, and even some closed
accounts???!!!! I've continued playing with it. I
finally have it working for my checking and savings
accounts. But I can't get it working for CapitalOne. I
have 2 accounts with them. CapitalOne unfortunately
requires a different user name and password for each
account. I can get one working but can't get the other.
I've started over numerous times and changed the order of
which accounts I add them in and keep getting the same
results.

One other problem I'm having is with my 401k account.
I've had a commission charge of 20.00 assessed on my
account. Yet Money doesn't categorize it as an expense,
but as a sell and forces me to show it as a income
category. I admit I'm not much on investing and watching
stock prices. But this just does not seem right to me.

And one last problem I've had is that this time when I've
told it to remove my financial information from MSN, it
even removed MSN Bill pay. In a way I'm thankful for
this, because then I didn't have to hassle with calling
them to cancel so I could reset my profile. However, I
am not turning MSN Bill Pay on again until I get all
these other files working.

So that is my list of many problems/complaints. Not very
different from most of the complaints, but at least I was
able to vent before trying to tackle it again.

I agree with all points below. I did have a problem with
online updates (downloading account information) which
was solved by deleting all of the online logon
information and re-establishing/setting up.

I like Money 05 and especially the home page which
appears to be quite flexible.
