In large part because a fair amount of the connectivity is actually
"brokered" via the MSn service, and the security mechanism for that service
is passport...

Not saying I agree, just pointing it out.

I don't know why they keep pressing the passport issue. Last thing I want
to do is rely on a third party service for access to my own files! Just a
stupid thing for them to expect users to do.

To answer your question, no, Microsoft doesn't care whether they have
the best personal finance software out there. That is far down on
their list of concerns.

How can I say that? Because when Microsoft does care, it tends to
produce good software. But Money is just a revenue stream to them.
That is why they want everyone on an annual upgrade cycle and that is
why they want to pack it with ads and make it more and more like one
of those domains that consists of one page with about 50,000 links to
Viagra dealers and nude photos of Britney Spears. You think any users
asked for more ads in Money? Of course not, Microsoft is not talking
to users about what would make Money useful, and hasn't in years. I'm
guessing the Money team doesn't even know what a user is. Just some
abstract concept to them, like happiness or eternity. That's why the
product is so mediocre, despite the fact that it is just a glorified
database front end.

Money is produced by Microsoft's Home division. The Home division has
a long history of producing crap. I cannot think of any remarkably
good products they've been responsible for. I think it is where they
send developers and managers who can't be trusted to work on the real
products.

MSFT just makes it "appear" like you need a passport
account; it presents you with a User License Agreement
(ULA)-which no one reads--then, "accept" brings you to
the Passport page. You have to decline so MSFT doesn't
ask for passport.

A little sneaky, sneaky.

Reminds me of RealPlayer--when it asked for info to
download all of them were unchecked--except, alllllll the
way at the bottom, a box (checked by default) was: Add me
to the email list for new updates.

Bad business practices.

Thanks, I'll give that a whirl. Microsoft sure is making it difficult for me
to like anything more than Money 2003. It just seems odd, don't they want to
have the best personal finance software out there? New versions should be
just blowing us away. If it takes them to change the development cycle to
every 2 years for this to happen, I would be more satisfied with that.

If you are creating a new file, you will be presented with an
agreement. As described in the last paragraph of that agreement, you
can create a no-passport file by clicking Decline.

Only the financial institutions with direct statements (OFX) or
website OFX or QIF will be able to be downloaded without Passport.

http://www.microsoft.com/money/bankonline.aspx select an
institution. If you have popups enabled, clicking an institution
gives a popup. If the popup says "You will need to use Microsoft
..NET Passport in order to access your account information.", you
would not get direct statements from that institution.

Unless you want to keep a copy of your Money file on-line so you can access
it when away from "home" you don't need a passport or a password with Money.
Without a passport you can still download share prices but MSN on-line bill
payment won't be available.

Default Money 2005 Requires Passport?

Ok, I have not upgraded in 2 years because I have been scared away. I
download the trial of 2005 and in order to even get started I have to
associate a passport account with the new money file? I have one, but only
use it for MSN messaging. I don't mind having the option, but a requirement?
I do not like this and it will probably be a deal breaker for me. Especially
when logging into passport is flaky at times.
