I would conclude that the .mbf file you have would be from a version
of Money newer than Money 97. So Money 97 would not recognize that
file.

How did you back up the file - floppy - cd?. Try copying the file to your
hard disk on the new computer - right click on the file and choose
properties and make sure the file is not marked for read only after you do
this. Then try to restore from there. Hope this helps.

I've got my entire life on Money 97 and my computer
