I had the same problem. There were some other threads that directed me> 2002 for the first time after I had to reinstall. Now > whenever I want to open I get a windows installer, then > error 1606. > After I 'cancel' and 'okay' several times it does then > open.Any one else having problems or a fix? to the right direction, but I still had to dig around for a while. I have Windows XP Professional, and had installed Service Pack 2. When I tried to run Microsoft Money, I had the prompt where Windows was asking me for the installation disk. Unlike some of the other people that had this problem, I did have my Money install disk. When I inserted that, the installer did an update. That cleared up the cursed install prompt everytime I tried to open a new window with Explorer. However, I was still getting the annoying "Error 1606" each time I opened, minimized, or maximized Money. If I hit cancel often enough, then I could get thru, but it was a pain. I knew that I could rollback SP2, but I really did not want to. I only have dialup, so it took 5 hours and 24 minutes to get it onto my computer. (But who is counting!) ![]() Here is the article I (eventually) found from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;315113 Since Microsoft has the annoying habit of changing their links, I will copy the information below. I found several posts that pointed to the Microsoft site, but the links did not work. You will also need this link, so you can get the "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" that you will probably need: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301 Since Money was re-installed, I had to find all of the places where I disabled all of the annoying audio help, and ads, and whatnot. And, of course, I had to download the updates for Money itself. And then I had a heart stopping experience when I thought that I had lost all of my transactions. I had moved my Money file to a different sub-folder in My Documents, but I did not change the name and I had forgotten that I had moved it. So, when I opened up what I thought was MY money file, it was really the blank one that Money automatically creates. Even though I had a backup, I thought that the new Money install would not read it. Whew! Hope this works out for you. This article was previously published under Q315113 SYMPTOMS When you start Microsoft Money 2002 or later on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive a Microsoft Windows Installer error message that is similar to the following: The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable media that is not available. Please insert the Money 200<x> CD. The <x> being a previous version of Money that you have had installed on your machine. CAUSE This behavior may occur if both of the following conditions are true: * An earlier version of Money was installed on the computer. * There is an entry for the previously installed version of Money in the "Currently installed programs" list in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. RESOLUTION To troubleshoot this behavior, follow these methods in the order that they appear. Method 1 Note Before you follow these steps, make sure that you back up any Money files that you want to save. 1. Log on to the computer as Administrator. 2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 4. In the "Currently installed programs" list, click Microsoft Money version number, and then click Remove. 5. In the "Currently installed programs" list, click Microsoft Money version number System Pack, and then click Remove. [When I did this, I got the Error 1606 again. I had to download and use the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (Msicuu.exe) that I mentioned above. If the link does not work, go to Microsoft's web site, and search for "Msicuu.exe".] 6. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the following folders, where C is the drive where Windows is installed: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Money Note The location of these folders may be different on your computer if you installed Microsoft Money to a location on your hard disk other than the default location. [If you can't see the "Application Data" folder, you will have to change your explorer preferences. Under the Explorer menu, go to "Tools-> Folder Options..." Click on the "View" tab, and scroll down to the "Hidden Files and folders" entry. Select "Show hidden files and folders.] 7. Right-click each folder, and then click Delete. 8. Log off the computer as Administrator. Go to Method 2. Method 2 1. Log on to the computer by using another user account. 2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 4. Make sure that the earier version of Money is not displayed in the "Currently installed programs" list. If there is an entry for the earlier version, click the listing, and then click Remove. 5. Log off the computer. 6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for each user account on the computer. Note If you cannot remove the entry of a earlier version of Money from the "Currently installed programs" list in Add/Remove Programs, you may have to install and run the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (Msicuu.exe). For additional information about the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, see the "More Information" section of this article. 7. Log on to the computer as Administrator. 8. Run the current Money setup. |

| The same thing happened when I tried to uninstall. I ran System restore to before the update and reinstalled Money then. It is okay now, so is has to do with the update.I have still been searching for a fix, but haven't found anything that works yet. Ihave moved the folder, did the registry thing, nothing worked, tried microsoft support, I guess I'll wait awhile before I do the update again if I do. - quote - > -----Original Message----- |
