| You can avoid the special category altogether, there is a workaround in Q 80453: ""Method 2 Enter the transaction, making the category a split transaction rather than a transfer. In the split screen, enter the first item, making transfer the category (as you would have in the Account Register). Enter a second item in the split screen, but categorize this one. Use the same dollar amount as you used for the transfer, and choose or create the appropriate category to reflect the action taken. Note This will be the information that is visible in the report. Enter one more item in the split screen to cancel the bogus entry that was just entered. Use the same dollar amount, but make it negative. You may want to create a category to properly organize this type of activity such as "Bogus." Note You will have a category in the report called Bogus that should be ignored. If needed, cancel the selection of this category by customizing the report.". I use this by creating a category called CC Payments:name of card so a typical bill transaction for these accounts looks like this: Transfer to CC:name of card xx.xx CC Payments: name of card. xx.xx Bogus (-xx.xx) It works for me! - quote - > -----Original Message----- > I enter the transfer before either of the downloads and find that Money > 04 (and previous versions) will match the download with the transfer. | I enter the transfer before either of the downloads and find that Money 04 (and previous versions) will match the download with the transfer. I have even had it pull the transfer from the upcoming bills and match that. I have not experienced the problem you are mentioning. | Since I download both my credit card and my checking account numbers, if I enter the "Transfer" Money doesn't seem to understand that the transfer is already recorded. so I get both payments. And that is normal? So, the best thing is to create a bunch of categories that are "transfered to" and "transfered from"? Does not matter.> I set up a credit card account and a checking account. | A Special category is one that not only enters the transaction in the account you are recording it in, but also in another 'linked' account. You can use either of the categories you mentioned, or a different category that is not 'special'. The regular category is the one I choose, although it means you have to record the transaction in both accounts. This way, if you ever have to export your transactions and import them into a new file, each account's transactions come in independantly from the others and there is less chance for errors. | I am just starting to use Money 2003 (had it for a while, but never used). I set up a credit card account and a checking account. If I pay off the credit card using the checking, I now find that there is a new category under "SPECIAL" under the category listings. This category is "Credit Card Payment : Name of Credit Card". There is also another category under special called "Transfer : Credit Card Name". Which one should I use as the category in the checking account when I pay the card off? The payoff in the credit card account exists no matter which one of the two aforementioned categories I use. I also do not understand the purpose of the "Special" groupings of categories. Thank you, - Phil |
