First, write-protect that floppy with the little slider. If you cannot copy the contents of that floppy to your hard drive, the problem is not Money. It is the drive or the floppy. Media failure is most probable, but things are not hopeless. I would try to copy the contents of that floppy using a different drive. Ask a few friends. Drive-to-drive variations can make the difference. Next I would look into a service or maybe a program. The service would have the higher probability of success I think. A program would probably be cheaper, but if it fails there would be that much more wear to the floppy before you resort to a service. I don't have knowledge of who is good. Here are a couple searches to get you started: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...y.&btnG=Search http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...kette.recovery I am surprised that Money 2004 was able to fit the backup to a single floppy. USB Flash drives are really nice for backup, and are more reliable than floppies. |

| OK, now I've really had it! This is my last resort! Several years ago, while using Money 97, our computer crashed. We had backed up every time we used money, so I thought we were OK. However, we could never get the backup file to pull up after fixing the computer and everything was lost. I vowed that this would not happen again, so I tried backing up on a ZIP disk instead, and then on CDs. I also got on this newsgroup and got the advice that I needed to first copy the backup file onto the desktop and open it from there. I tried doing that with the old program, and it seemed to work. I thought the problem was solved. However, in December we got a new computer and upgraded to Money 2004 Deluxe. I went back to backing up on a floppy because I figured not using the "copy to the desktop" technique had been the whole problem in the first place. Well, our new computer had a problem a couple months ago. I had backed up the checkbook, but during this problem, I was able to get into safe mode and backed it up again just in case I had missed anything. We ended up having to reformat the computer to solve the problem, but I felt safe knowing I'd backed things up. Once everything was reinstalled, I tried to restore the backup. I tried opening the backup from the disk, and it wouldn't work, and then I remembered that I would probably have to copy it onto the desktop and then open it, so I tried that. It still didn't work. Basically what happens is if I go into the program (Microsoft Money) and click on Restore under the File menu, it goes through the process a while, then says that the file is corrupted or it is not a Money backup file (it has the money icon and everything by it though...). If I try to copy it, it works for a long time, and then gives me a data error, which says "cyclic redundancy check" in parenthesis after. Then I found something in the Money program that said it would repair corrupted files, so I tried that. After working for a while, a pop-up message comes up that says "Invalid Data base." If I view the "Log" for the process, it says there are "no broken records in the original." So, I am at a loss! Maybe I just have a bad disk and I am out of luck, but I don't know why it wouldn't have told me the disk was bad every time I used it. This is extremely frustrating! I don't know why I even use the program if I'm bound to lose everything if we ever have a computer problem. Someone please help or at least put me out of my misery! |
