| If sample file still doesn't open, I'd suggest that you try the voodoo steps previously provided. If those don't get the sample file to open, then I'm betting you've tapped out what the NG can provide for you. I had mis-read your earlier posting; I had thought you said you did not have a password on that file. Going back, I see you were very clear, and my head was apparently not. However we are distressed that salv.exe thinks your file is hosed. Hold onto copies of your ..mny file, and hold onto copies of your *.mbf files. Your *.mbf (Money Backup File) may be what you end up using if you get your installation fixed and find that the *.mny file does not work. While you are thinking about it, burn copies of those files onto a CDR and/or a USB flash drive. OK. What you will want to do, after making extra copies of your *.mny file(s) and your *.mbf files, is to reinstall Money from the disks that came with your system. If you find a Money disk or section of one of those disks, run setup.exe. If you don't find the Money section of the disks, I would call Dell for assistance if your support there is still in force. They will know about the disks you received, and they are responsible for the support for the OEM version of Money they provide. If you are beyond your included support time, you have the option of paying Dell or Microsoft for support. However buying a newer version of Money would probably cost about the same. So at that point I would download the trial Money 2004 to make sure that is going to successfully read your .mny file or your .mbf. The 60-day free trial will probably last until Money 2005 is available also. Perhaps there will be a late sale on Money 2004 alternatively. |

| If the sample file would not open, I'd get THAT solved before doing ANYTHING more with your data file. In fact, I'd make sure that I had backups for my backups of the data file ASAP. Do not overwrite what could be good copies/backups of your current data file with the data file as it's stored now. | Well, you've run me out of everything I know to try. We did the mangled Passport thing. Cal's been trying the backlevel version thing. We've tried the bad password thing. Nothing has worked. There just really isn't much left except the voodoo fixes. If you are up for those, see http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=130. (They haven't been reported effective for this, but you never know about the voodoo fixes.) Does Money open its own sample file? Do you have backups? Do they open? Suffice it to say that reports like yours are very rare. Usually somewhere along these paths we've found the fix. Well sometimes it helps to get a teenager to help navigate some of> I try AND in what order? (Please be very simple & clear. > Pretend you're explaining it to a child. :-) ) these things. :-) But just identify the sections you find hard to read, and I will try to elaborate on them. You can open Windows Explorer by holding down the <windows> key and poking E. You probably know another way, but that is handy. With that you will be able to browse to salv.exe, and run it by double-clicking. - quote - > FYI
Good. I suspected that, but I wanted to make sure that the simple> I checked the entire drive & went into the folder housing > all my money files. cures were not missed. Did you buy Money separately, or did Money 2003 come with your computer? The reason I ask is that could affect some future alternative. - quote - > When answering, please include replies for:

Are you saying I > should do so, if I use that attempt? wait until you have tried the other things. There exists the possibility that Money 2004 will open your file fine. But I think trying salv.exe first would make sense. Normally salv.exe is used to fix a corrupted file. Now I don't know that is not the case, but salv.exe will do one more thing: it will tell us if you really have somehow gotten a real password on that file. - quote - > Where would I find salv.exe?
Expect to find salve.exe in"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money 2003\System" except that your path may differ... so adapt to your install. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;274584 describes salv.exe. It offers a download of salv.exe, but he one on your system already may be newer. So what I am particularly interested in is does salv.exe ask for a password? does it think it found problems and made a fixed version? (use a different filename for the repaired version). If so, you will be able try that. There are other things to try. One is to open the sample.mny in your Money directory by double-clicking that file. If it fails to open, that points to your installation. That could be good news. Re-install is easy. |

The location probably would have been the same folder where your .mny file resides. There is another alternative along the same line: install the Money 2004 trial into a different folder by choosing the Advanced option. Make an extra copy of your .mny file. See if Money 2004 can open/convert your file. If so, we could think about what that indicates. Another thing that comes to mind is to use salv.exe on your file. You have it read your current .mny file and make a repaired one under a different name. If salv.exe indicates you have a password, I think you somehow got a password on the file. If it does not, perhaps the repaired version will work. Or perhaps a Money 2003 re-install would get you going. |
