Default Re: Using client software

One additional question, since I just checked this out myself:
If you look at the details of the file you're trying to open, what is the
Date Modified date/time?
I happened to have a file that was last accessed a few days ago, simply
opening it but not going past the sign-in page did not change the Date
Modified for that file. Even when I entered an incorrect password, it still
did not change that date/time. But once I entered the correct password the
Date Modified date/time changed.
So, verify what the 'Date Modified' on the files you're trying to open are.

It could be due to the items in the FAQ that Cal mentions.
Therefore, were these files created (last opened) in the current version of
Money you have installed, or do you actually now have an older version of
Money than those files used?
What version is that?

If it is the same version and you are not seeing the option "I don't need to
use online featurest that require Microsoft Passport at this time" on the
password sign in page, have you tried running msmoney -s ?

Once you get this offline choice try signing in. If you can get in then you
can go to the Password Manager and remove (and if desired) re-associate your
Passport.

My suspicion is what is described in these similar FAQs:

Yes, the files were previously accessed well before last
Mon.

I did not get the work offline choice, but I did
disconnect the computer from the network.

I have not changed my passport login. I use Hotmail and
since it continued to work OK I figured that couldn't be
the problem.

The error message I got was: "The password you have
entered is incorrect..."

Thanks for the response, I really appreciate it. Do you
have any other suggestions I can try?

Mark asks good questions there. I would follow that path first.

Just to clarify:
1. The files you tried to open were last accessed prior to Monday?
2. Were you trying online or offline access? (Or did you not even have the
"work offline" choice?)
3. Had you changed or reset your Passport password in an attempt to fix
this?
4. What is the exact error message you are getting with those older files?

That should have done it.

When you double-click the older .mbf file, what happens? Password
request? If you changed your Passport recently, try both versions.

Otherwise I would try installing your existing version of Money (if
it is not an OEM version) to a different computer and seeing if you
get the problem there. I am wondering if there is not a different
problem.

And if you are not running Money 2004, I would try installing the
Money 2004 Deluxe demo version (from the same country) to see if
that makes sense of your backup. If you do that to your main
computer, install it to a different folder/directory. That will
allow both versions to be started, but not at the same time. These
things are not what I would have expected you to need to get those
files restored; your system may have a different twist.

Per advice from Microsoft Online Support, I tried 2
methods...First, just double clicking on older .mbf
and .mny files and trying to open them. That didn't
work. Then they told me to use Start-> Run-> Msmoney -s on
older .mny and .mbf files, also to no avail. Do you have
any other suggestions?

Thanks!

What did you do to try to restore a backup?

Default Using client software

I specifically and consciously chose to use client
software (rather than a web site) to consolidate my
financial data. My goal was to have the data (and
manipulations thereof) accessible whether I was on-line
or off-line; to have private consolidation of all the
data rather than on a server in the sky somewhere; and,
to have local control.

All this has been thwarted. I have backups from every
month going back a full calendar year on duplicate PCs
and none of the data is accessible.

If I had any idea that using Passport for on-line
authentication could impact my ability to get to my own
client software and associated data, I would never have
used it.

This is more than a straightforward software error. The
mere fact that this could occur is an extremely unwelcome
surprise.
