Reuters has the S&P 500 p/e ratio at 17.93.

The earnings are reported at different times making the ratio a moving
target. Another factor that is important is the number of shares
outstanding along with the possibility that dilution can occur in
cases of options or convertible bonds.

Why not look at SPY? It shows a P/E of 13.47 as of 9/30/08. If that's
not accurate enough, you can do the math from the 9/30 closing price to
get a precise number.

The Wall Street Journal has index p/e ratios and dividend yields as part of
their market data.

i was told this was on the s&p site but all i can find is a yearly p/e
ratio.

anyone know where this can be found nowadays? and why is this
fundamental number so hard to find? maybe i can calculate it.
