Another possibility is to hold all assets jointly; for stocks I believe it
is called JTWROS (joint tenancy with right of survivorship). That would be
ideal for elderly couples where there is no chance of separation or divorce
and where each spouse wants to leave everything to the other. Personal and
household items usually pass with no fuss, but a will is still necessary to
cover the situation where both die at the same time.

The advantage of TOD accounts and the living trust is that it avoids
probate and attorney fees. Properly done, the will just handles the
minor personal property etc.
