Right. Disparaging posts about Wal-Mart shoppers tend to
chill away the folks who arguably most need to participate
in financial planning fora like this one. Demographic
studies indicate that "Wal-Mart customers' average incomes
are below the national average... Some analysts estimate
that more than one-fifth of Wal-Mart's customers have no
bank accounts, which would be about twice the national
rate... " -- Columnist Liz Pulliam Weston,
moneycentral.msn.com, banking section.

The good news is that check means your income, for a single quarter, is two to
four times the annual median income in your state. I'll bet there are a lot of
people that will trade places with you.

I had my wife write the check for the first time this quarter. She now knows
why I grump around for a few days four times a year.

Just be grateful we don't get all the government we pay for.

Ever think that your tax dollars also grease the skids for
your profits via ensuring good roads; courts that enforce
business laws and contracts and so to a great extent enable
your mighty profits as a landlord; state schools and a
military that help ensure your neighors have more than a
life of desperation (read: crime, with you the victim);
corporate support of institutions such as "Home Depot," from
whom you get great prices, and so forth?

If one is not able to live comfortably after taxes, then one
needs to make practical choices, and quit expecting
government to grease the skids of your livelihood.

Because we've been teaching folks the wrong ideas, and
reinforcing the wrong behaviors. It's time to put our collective
foot down and say "No More!"

I just shipped off a check for 3Q 2006 quarterly estimated
taxes. It's ridiculous. My quarterly tax bill to the IRS and the
Ohio Dept. of Taxation, when combined, is *more* than the
annual median income in my state. A single quarter. Ridiculous.
The way I figure it, this year I'm paying for four complete
families to live on my tax dollars. When you figure that SS,
Welfare, WIC, et.al. -- when you figure these (in any combination)
ain't gonna get anywhere near "median" income levels, you're
really looking at me supporting 6 or 8 families, in addition to
my own.

(Yes, I'm in a bad mood. You would be too.)

It's time we quit taking some folks' money to pay for other
folks' bad decisions. The way I see it -- if you're taking my
money to live your life, then I've got a say in how you live
it. If you want me to butt out, then you can't have my money.

So ... yeah -- live close to the services you use.

No, senior citizens have different requirements than younger people. It
is very common for senior citizens to experience moderate declines in
eyesight, depth perception, and reflexes as they age. They can be quite
capable of driving locally at moderate speeds, but can have difficulty
with dense, high-speed freeway traffic. They can also have additional
difficulty with their eyesight at night. So, they need places to shop
that they can drive to without getting on the freeway, and close enough
that they can get home well before dark.

With the rate of new Wal-Mart construction, you can live anywhere and
expect to have one near you sooner or later.

If they don't, then they darned well better not come back and
tax my income to pay for a bus to haul the old folks around
because they live out in the toolies. People need to make
practical choices, and not expect the rest of the folks in the
country to pay for their bad choices.

By this reasoning, shouldn't everyone live within 5 miles of a Wal-Mart,

Why?

According to this study we should all retire in China.

Because that's where a lot of retired folks do their shopping.
I'm retired; Wal-Mart and Home Depot get a lot of my business
and they're only 5 miles away.
No Costco or Sam's Club close enough to make it worthwhile.

because all retired people are supposed to fit inside the study's cookie
cutter.

Default Very Interesting - Things to consider about retirement communities

According to a study done by Washington University you should look for
a retirement community that is:

Less than 10 miles from a WalMart.

Less than 20 miles form a Costco or Sams Club.

And less then 10 miles from a Lowes or Home Depot or other discount
hardware store.

Also,

To estimate the cost of living in the area that your are considering
moving to, go in a McDonalds and check the price of a Big Mac and the
compare it to the price of a Big Mac where you live now.
