so, see for example:

I'm a CFP and sell advice only, not money management or stock picking.

Not so. When I went through (1993), it was six courses, only one of which
was insurance.

It's best for seekers of advice to find a planner who charges an hourly fee,
not commission and not percent of assets, if the seeker wants unbiased help.

Thus prompting my desire to author a book titled, "Where Are the
Customers' Yachts?" But then I found someone beat me to it.

I understand many people would rather manage their own investing and
think paying someone else for advice often ends up being just a waste
of money. But some people don't have the time or the inclination to do
what you are doing, and for better or worse, the demand for financial
planners is growing, even as studies show consumers are confused about
what different types of advisers offer. Also, I'm finding many people
manage their own investments but do check in with a fee-only adviser
once in a while. Anyway, I'm looking for people who looked into getting
help and then backed off, finding it too confusing and often contrary
to their interests. Sounds like this happened to you. can I call you?

Sorry, didn't mean to be sarcastic - it just seems to me that this
forum is dedicated to financial planning. Not meaning to be rude with
these questions, but have you read some of the posts? Based on your
research, what would a registered CFP add?

I believe I have seen CFP's post a reply, from time to time, and my
impression is that there are some very smart professional people who
offer their advice. Years ago, I looked over a syllabus for CFP and
noted that half of it was on insurance (life, health). Most of the
other material I already had familiarity with (savings, fund
selections, bonds, I recall some portfolio management - but notably not
much or nothing on stock selection, which was a shocking
disappointment). In trying to find texts used, I discovered that
apparently the CFP Institute or whatever keeps their texts a secret
until you ante up their fee.

Default finding a financial planner

For a story in the washington post about how to find a financial
planner, I'm looking for folks who would be willing to share their
stories on how they found one. I'd also love to hear from people who
started looking but then found the whole topic so confusing (which it
is!) and have temporarily given up.
