Some states run abandoned property web sites. That may help, if that's the
case.

His employer should have that information. He should contact
the HR dept at his last US employer. If the company no longer
exists, then you may have to find who they were bought out by
or merged with.

Beyond that, it is a detective game. Does he have any paper-
work from the past jobs, such as statements, pay stubs, W-2
forms, etc. Did he do his own taxes, or use a tax preparer?
If the latter, perhaps his tax preparer still has records in
his file. Or maybe your father can get a copy of his taxes
from the IRS (they have a form for that).

Did your father simply abandon the 401K (ie, leave it with
the company when he left), or did he do a roll-over? If he
did not do a roll-over, then the 401K is still with his past
employer. If that employer still exists, they would be able
to look it up. If that employer does not exist, and was not
taken over or merged with, then the 401K may have been sent
to your state as abandoned property. If he did do a roll-over,
then he is going to have to find that bank or brokerage firm.

The easiest way is to contact the former employer through which he made
the 401(k) contributions in question.

Default Lost 401(k)

I have a rather unusual question that I hope someone can help with...

My father worked in the US for many years before moving to India, and I
believe during this time he made contributions to a 401(k) plan. Now
that he is retired, he would like to come back to the US to live with
me, and draw on his retirement savings. The problem is that he cannot
remember what financial institution the savings were in.

Is there any way I can locate the savings (using his name, SSN, etc)?
