If you are a Fidelity customer, they have a comprehensive, in-depth
planner that guides you through the maze and produces a plan. It is
called the retirement income planner.

What sort of investments? Do you mean allocating one's
assets between stocks (international, large value, small
cap, etc.), bonds, etc.?

If so, I think the best approach is to average, in one's own
mind, the opinions of many experts. They don't all agree
100%. Yet none of them (generally) are wrong without the
benefit of hindsight. I suggest spending a few hours with
the free online tools listed at
http://home.earthlink.net/~elle_navorski/id4.html and see if
they help.
