It used to be that if you did such a co-mingling you could not
roll the IRA back into a 401(k). But that was changed a few
years ago, and now co-mingling doesn't stop you from being
able to roll back.

Default Combining IRAs

Suppose I leave my job and roll over and convert my 401(k) into a new
IRA account at a mutual fund (within the 60 days allotted). Suppose
further that I wish to make a regular, traditional (non-Roth) IRA
contribution for the year. If I want to, can I just add to the IRA that
was once the 401(k) or is that co-mingling of funds not
allowed/advised? I can understand that if that can be done, I may not
be able to roll the whole thing over to a new 401(k) at a new employer.
Thanks.

Sara
