It's not only the qualified dividends that cause problems. Last year,
Fidelity mailed me a correction for a foreign fund that didn't arrive until
April 16th! And I know that their first pass this year for this fund is
also wrong, because it shows $0 in box 6 (foreign taxes paid).

FWIW, that April 16th correction was de minimus, and if the IRS wants its
money, I'll follow the old joke tagline, and pay the two dollars.

Last year, Fidelity sent out updated 1099s a month or so
after the first ones at the end of Jan. I don't remember
what exactly the difference was, but it was very slight.
Probably, as you suggested, the qualified dividends.

What I did last year was to fully prepare my taxes in early
Feb, then just sit on them for a while, then walk through
every form one more time before printing and filing. Last
year, I didn't send in the final forms until early April.
This year, I'm almost done with my first pass now - the
earliest ever - and I expect to get the rest of my
documentation in the next week or two. I'll probably do my
final pass and filing in mid march. Either way, it's
just so nice to have it ready-do-go this early. In years past,
I've spent the weekend before 4/15 scrambling away, or had to
file an extension. This is much better...

I completely agree. Unless there's a big refund, I'm waiting
until late March at the earliest. I'll get the return all done,
but will then put it aside and wait for potential 1099-DIV
corrections.

Congrats, about 8 months early!

What are your thoughts on 1099-DIV corrections? So many mutual funds had
them last year because of the qualified-dividend issue that I think it
pays to wait until at least early March to file. It's such a pain in the
neck amending a return because of a small correction in dividing
dividends between qualified & not.

I had problems with Opera (a PDF 1099 with all fields blank) but Firefox
downloaded the forms just fine. I avoid IE as far as possible. I have adobe
reader 6.0 too.

It looks like your description is pretty accurate, though on a working
system (mine works :-), the file gets downloaded as a filled-in pdf
file. Adobe started providing fill-in forms in version 6.0, I think.
So I would expect your reader to be able to handle this. I'm running
7.0 on Windows, and see the filled-in .pdf file.

I know that it is a fill-in form, because when I save the file, I lose
all the filled-in information (effectively, what you are seeing, but
only on disk). IMHO, where Vanguard botched this was in not granting
rights to the document so that filled-in values could be saved (like the
IRS does with its fill-in .pdf tax forms). That "protection", plus your
particular setup, could explain what you are seeing on the screen.

Another problem is that what I do see online at Vanguard omits the
foreign tax breakdown that they mailed me.

Lucky you. While I've received some 1099's from Fidelity, I called them
up this weekend because others weren't even on their website. They said
that they still have to run a batch next week. (And what they show
online says in highlighted red: "This is for informational use only.
This does not replace the official tax documents mailed to you.")

Not to mention that when Fidelity reports proceeds, they deduct the
commissions but not other transaction fees (leaving you with an
inconsistency between what you report on your 1040 and what is on your
1099), they lose track of cost basis when you accept a tender offer,
etc.

I don't find that anyone is doing a great job of providing tax
information electronically.

I run Linux exclusively and see the exact same issue. I did receive my
Vanguard forms in the mail (except for the REIT fund stuff that is always
delayed), so it won't be too big an issue. It is sort of irritating that
their being stuck in the Micro$oft world is alienating an ever-increasing
segment of their customers.

Default Vanguard online access to 1099s

Just curious if anyone else has tried to access it yet.

I log into Vanguard's site and it shows availability
for the 2005 1099DIV, except that when I click on it,
a pop-up window opens, a download starts and I end
up with a file called "TaxFormServlet". (Clearly a
bit of broken file-identification in the auto-download
code).

The file contains a document format I've never seen
but it references through an https a blank 1099 document
on Vanguard's site, along with, below that reference,
text containing all the information which should be
filled into that 1099.

I can pick out the pieces of information - it's clear
enough from the structure of this document, but it's
pretty annoying that they don't just store a fully
filled-in PDF on their site that they could let me
download the same way that Fidelity does.

A little more digging and it appears that the file
is an "FDF" file - an "Acrobat Portable Document Input Form"
which makes enough sense, but Adobe Reader 6.0 doesn't
appear to be able to read it - it causes the 1099 PDF
to get downloaded (again - I have like 4 copies of it)
but still doesn't fill it in.

Further digging and it appears that Adobe has a newer
version of Adobe Reader (and an astoundingly bad means
of downloading it). It's huge and it'll take me a little
while to deal with.

Anyone else have better luck with this?

I'm going to file a complaint with Vanguard, but I
suspect that, as in past dealing with them, they'll
just say that I should get Windows instead of a Mac,
rather than fixing non-standards-compliant web pages.

Seriously, just a plain old PDF would have been soooo
easy. Sometimes Vanguard just really pisses me off.

On the bright side, between Fido and having already
gotten my W-2, I'm like 90% done with my taxes.
