Medicare recipients are NOT eligible for HSA's........
If you BOTH have medical issues, that might be a major factor in
your ABILITY to secure a NEW High Deductible M/M policy. It
should not PRECLUDE your from new coverage, just might cost more.

You might want to investigate the possibility of asking your present
carrier if they would be willing to issue a NEW H/D/M/M policy
in exchange for the current LOW DEDUCTIBLE Hospitalization
(or possibly a M/M) contract that you now have.
It would in all probability be to THEIR advantage to do so. They
would be saving money on "the small claims" (which YOU would
then be paying for out of your HSA account).
DON'T GIVE UP.

Thanks Tad. I spent a good bit of Saturday evening exploring their Web
site and was impressed. However, there is nothing like a recommendation
from someone who has used their services to raise the confidence level.

I should have been more specific about my situation. My wife and I are
not on medicare. I am self employed working part time and she is not
employed. In addition, we both have health issues that may force us to
stay with the medical insurance carrier we are currently with. Having
an HSA with a separate custodian is better than no HSA at all. At the
moment we are exploring our options but the key will be whether one or
both of us has any flexibility in changing insurers.

Thanks again for your help.

Bill,
I use, and am generally satisfied with, www.hsabank.com - I started
there when it was msabank.com so it's been a few years. I haven't
checked alternatives in awhile but I think they're still one of the
lower-cost providers.

I may have misread your original post. It appears (from the above) that
you are now asking if you can use a Health Insurance CONTRACT
(the word plan might infer some group plan which would NOT work
for your personal program) from a Carrier that does NOT offer HSA
custodial service for the HSA contribution.

The answer is a DEFINITE YES. You can use ANY Carrier's
HIGH DEDUCTIBLE MAJOR MEDICAL PLAN, just so long
as it meets the required minimum and maximum amounts. You would
then contact a separate custodian (probably a bank) to guard your
HSA account.

HOWEVER, I must point out that when using two separate sources,
you will in all probability incur higher maintenance costs. Just a thought

Thanks Cal. As I said in my original post, I would like to use a health
insurance plan from a company that does not offer HSA custodial
services.

I'll try Google and see what I find.

There are many. Do a goggle on HSA to locate them.

Why prey tell do you NOT want to have the carrier act as custodian??

Default Non-insurance company HSA custodians?

I am planning to set up an HSA, however, I would like to use a health
insurance plan from a company that does not offer HSA custodial
services. Are there any companies that act as custodians for HSAs other
than health insurance carriers that only act as custodians for their
own policy holders?
