(All those SAT analogy questions finally come in useful :-) That is, just as you have a combined $4000 limit for Roth and Traditional IRAs (plus a catch up of $1000 for age 50+), you have a combined $15K limit for Roth and Traditional 401(k)s (plus a catch up of $5000 for age 50+). | The Roth 401k would allow MORE than the $4000 allowed to an IRA (to my understanding), which is the Roth 401k advantage (plus more taxable income for the government). Search this group for Roth 401k and see what comes up, there was a discussion on it last fall. |

| Hi everyone, I have a question about the limits on the new roth 401k, and I can't seem to find an answer yet. If anyone here can answer, or point me to a good site or publication that can, I'd appreciate it. The question is, if I'm already contributing the max to my "regular" Roth IRA and then my employer opens a roth 401k, can I then also contribute the max into BOTH my individual roth ira and the company roth 401k? Or does the max contribution apply to BOTH types of accounts, i.e., I can only put a combined total of the maximum of 4000 into both accounts? Everything I've read implies that the latter is true. But if that's the case, then what is the advantage to the roth 401k, through your employer? You can open a Roth IRA just about anywhere on your own. Feel free to respond to me directly. Thanks, Lori |
