Variable annuities, tax free mutual funds are other options.

Besides IRAs, there are 401(k) plans (if offered by your employer), 529
savings plans (if saving for higher education), and cash value life
insurance (if the goal is to pass on money to heirs).

The capital gains on a portfolio of individual stocks are tax deferred
until sales are made.
