That's actually not quite correct - most reps with Amex (Ameriprise,
moving forward) start out as employees of the company, but transition
to being a franchisee after a few years of building their practice.
The upside is there, it just starts after a few years of being an
employee and learning the ropes while making a steadier income.

So, you get screwed on both ends...you have to do all the same
work and business building as a independent rep, but you don't
have the upside income potential that an independent rep has.

Since all of their planners are independent reps, I wonder if
they have to pay for their own signs on the building? If so,
that must be quite a burden since this is the 4th new brand
for this company in 15 years. Or maybe few of their planners
stay around that long, so it doesn't really matter?

As part of its spinoff from American Express, AEFA announced Wednesday it
will it will adopt the new name Ameriprise Financial this summer. The
previously announced American Express spinoff (See American Express to Spin
off Financial Advisory Business) is expected to be completed in the third
quarter of 2005. The company will begin operating under the Ameriprise
