When calling them (their toll-free phone number, along with account number, should be on your statement), ask them what you can and cannot do with this account. Note that TRP has superior investment accounts - certainly as good as any other custodian and it's not a "given" that you should move it. Providing you have full access to TRP funds, there are advantages to keeping it there as a 401k. Good luck and let us know what TRP says. -HW "Skip" Weldon Columbia, SC |

This sounds really odd. It would be interesting to simply file> HR people, they checked and said that they're still being auditted. I don't see how they could freeze a 401K that long...what if you were a year from retriment at the time? Would you simply retire with no 401K money? Are you still getting statements? Have you tried calling the 401K company directly? I'd really like to hear how this one turns out...please post back with updates. -john- -- ================================================== ================== John A. | Here's my scenario for an odd (I think) situation with my employer-provided 401K plan: When I was first hired with ABC Corp, they had a 401K deferred compensation plan that I contributed to fairly aggressively. At the time, the company was in the process of being purchased by XYZ Corp, a behmoth DOD contractor. When I'd been here for about 1 year, they finalized the sale and froze the 401K accounts. They told us that the plan/accounts needed to be auditted before they could roll the funds into XYZ's program. Fine, no problem. XYZ immediately allowed us to enroll in their 401K plan, and I took advantage of that. Now, over 4 years later, the old 401K's are still frozen and when I asked our HR people, they checked and said that they're still being auditted. They didn't have any more detailed information than that. In this day and age of Enron shenanigans and corporations wiping out their pension plans, I'm a bit leery. Does it really take 5 or more years to audit a company's 401K program? My HR people may be telling the truth or telling me what they've been told or they may be hiding things and I'd never know. Can I ask the fund managers (T. Rowe Price, I think) for a status? Apparently I'm the only suspicious person in my company because the HR people acted like they'd never been asked that before and I had to jog their memory that the accounts were even out there. If such a long audit is normal then I'll back off and relax. But if it's not, I'd like to try to roll that money back into an IRA or something else that *I* control. - Sharon "I fail to recognize your reality and will substitute my own." |
