Money is fungible, and I don't see much difference between paying from
a checking account or a mutual fund. If selling the fund would trigger
a short-term capital gain, I would look for another source of funds.

On the other hand ...
When you opened the mutual fund account, what was the intended
purpose? If it were intended, for example, for a child's college
tuition, I would be reluctant to buy a car with the money, unless I
were confident of being able to pay the tuition through some other
means.

Lets say I have 50K invested in John Dow mutual fund. And I want to
buy a $20,000 automobile. Is it acceptable to pay for this automobile
through the mutual fund or is it generaly frowned upon?
