Class B shares generally cost _more_ in the long run
than Class A shares since instead of imposing the load
up front, they impose it over the course of several years.

The OP should consider moving his solo 401k to a discount
broker if his current one won't allow him to move into
true no-load funds.

Just open an account with a no-load family that handles solo 401K's or with a
discount broker mutual fund supermarket. Then transfer the assets from Smith
Barney to the new custodian via direct rollover.

If you have some funds or investments in the Smith Barney account you wan to
keep, just do the above for those funds you want to transfer. This assumes what
you will have left wit Smith Barney meets any minimum requirements they may
have.

Talk to your FC (financial consultant) about class B shares and
ETF (exchange traded funds). If your plan allows these types
of investments, they may meet your needs. Class B shares
avoids the big up front load. You also avoid the back end
load if you hold the shares. ETF that are based on indexes
have no load, but you do have to pay a brokerage fee on trades
since they trade like regular stocks.

Default How to change 401K mutual funds held with Smith Barney?

I have solo 401K held with Smith Barney. I have in it a fund or two
not doing well, Janus. I want to trade them for other no load funds.
SB will only buy load funds, one they suggested has front load of
5.25%! How can I change the funds without a withdrawal penalty?
