This has been available to retail banking customers for several years now.
Business owners, a little longer. I've been moving money between
institutions with a click since the late 1990s.

try finance.yahoo.com. I use that to transfer money from any bank
account to any bank account free. There is a fee for big transfers.

I can also do that through ingdirect. They have free transfer to and
from them to my checking accounts.

John;
I maintain my savings account at ING. I have instant access
to transfer cash to my local bank "overnight".

For me, these institutions absolutely have to have ATM and on-line
services for me to be a customer. But at the same time, I will
only deal with companies that have a physical location, and who
are staffed such that they can do my business in person, and
say "thank you" at the conclusion of the transaction.

One feature of the electronic systems that nobody seems to have
that I would find very useful is the ability to transfer money
between accounts at different institutions. For example, to
move money from my US Bank checking to my Smith Barney money
market, or pull from my Wells Fargo savings account and deposit
to my US Bank checking. Anyone know if this type of feature is
in the pipeline for the future?

Default Banking without a bank

I'm working on a magazine article about retail banking and I'm
interested in talking to consumers who decided to stop using a
traditional bank in favor of using the banking/lending services of a
brokerage, internet bank, credit union, finance company—or some
combination of all four. Please drop me a note if you can help.

Thanks,

Anne
