Default Low Fico, Debt Free - Now what?

For the past two years, my wife and I have been dilligently been trying to
eliminate all of her debt and subsequently try and improve her credit score.
I am in the high 600s and she is in the low 500s.

We have been very dilligent about paying everything on time for the past few
years and are now at the point where she is debt free except for student
loans but are not sure where to go from here. I've read two different
schools of thought:

1. Don't do anything and just wait it out. Over time, the score will
improve.

2. Incur realtively small amounts of debt and insure that they are paid off
in a timely manner over the course of several months.

She still has several credit cards and department store cards with no
balances (obviously) and otherwise have sound financials. Would love to hear
what you think.

Thanks!
