| As pointed out above, you should consider performance and expense ratios. Fidelity focuses on managed funds and may not be the best choice for an index fund. Vanguard has a low expense ratio and their S&P 500 Index fund is the largest mutual fund. "The CREF Equity Index Account is a highly diversified portfolio designed to track the overall U.S. stock market as represented by the Russell 3000® Index." According to Scudder their Equity 500 Index: "Seeks to match as closely as possible, before expenses, the performance of the Standard & Poor's 500 Composite Stock Price Index (S&P 500 index)" So these two funds have slightly different objectives in that the CREF fund invests in a larger market than the Scudder fund. If you type "Index fund" into the search box at: https://www.fidelity.com/ then click on link to Fidelity Index funds you can get a list of their funds and performance. Spartan 500 Index Fund is probably closest to the Scudder Equity 500 Index. I don't see a Fidelity fund that corresponds to the CREF fund, but the Spartan Total Market Index Fund is probably closest. The difference is that it is based on the Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index instead of the Russell 3000. In comparing funds, in addition to objectives, you should consider performance, expense ratios, the fund manager(s) and their performance of this fund and prior funds. And probably a few other things that other will mention. -- Richard McBane |
