Isn't it strange how people forget that. It reminds me of
an interview that Mark Twain gave once:

"Mr. Twain, you have made a lot of money over the years,
when you look for an investment, what interest rate do you
decide is best for you". Mr. twain replied, "I always look for
a 100% return". "But Mr. Twain, that is not reasonable in today's
market". Mr. Twain said " Son if I get ALL of my money back, then
that IS a 100% return".............................

How do the different financial instruments compare? I see several
options:
Pass-book savings
CDs
Checking accounts
Credit union accounts
Money-markets
Treasury bills and bonds

Pass-book savings may be safe, but in the event of bank problems, how do
you make withdrawals?

Excellent point! The benefit of a savings account is not the return,
but the certainty that the money will be there when needed.

Over the last 12 months the CPI rose 3.3% (all items) so you are losing a
guaranteed 1.17% to inflation BEFORE taxes. Think about it. Are you still
happy?

It doesn't beat that, but ING Direct (ingdirect.com) is paying
a 2.20% APY with no fees and no minimum balance.

I recently opened Privilege Money Market Gold at Charter One Bank. I opened
it online and funded the account directly from my existing account online.
I am getting 2.5% annualized return. You need a balance of 10,000 to get
this rate. This rate is guaranteed till Jan. 2005.

Bankrate.com says this bank provides the highest money market rate as of
now.

As you know by now, there are NO HIGH MM rates.
ING, is currently paying 2.10% on their Savings Account,
from which you can transfer money to your local bank overnight.
