If you haven't read anything yet, start with "A Random Walk Down Wall
Street" by Burton Malkiel. He is a key advisor to Vanguard and professor at
Princeton.

Consider buying some shares in a home building stock as insurance
against increased housing prices. Trading On Line (Toll Brothers, Inc) is located in
PA, so you should be able to keep up with their activities and any
developing problems.

Put the money in a CD account and start reading and getting yourself
educated. Then you would be able to make more informed decisions./

Please don't let John's rude reply give you a negative feeling about the
folks here who are generous with their time and advice. Those folks
recommended to me Tobias' "The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need".
There are also the "Dummies" books - those ugly yellow books which
apparently have some good stuff for beginners in them. John was certainly
right on with part of his reply, in that before you can invest, you need to
decide what it is your investment goal is. Are you saving for a down payment
on a house? or for your retirement? or maybe for grad school? Do you want
this money to grow, or are you concerned with preservation of principal?

I hope others will give you further direction.

There are book stores full of books on investing, and websites
that have suggested reading lists. All it takes is a few minutes
of work to seek it out. If you are not willing to do at least that
much, then there isn't much the rest of us can do to help you out.

As far as where to invest $5K? It depends on when you need the money.
If it is short-term, pick a CD with the right term, or keep it in
a money market account. If it is long term, then put it in an index
fund or buy some exchange traded fund stocks from a discount broker,
where the ETF's are in an index. Vipers might be a good ETF to check
out.

Default Investing---where to start?

Hi

I am a student earning a modest stipend and have a savings of about $5000
that I want to invest someplace. I do not have a clue on where to invest and
what books I can read to know about the nitty-gritty of investing. I
enquired with banks in the area and the interest rates are pittance on CDs.
Any advise on banks or investment firms/funds or stock markets would be
welcome. Kindly redirect replies to jayanthk_stanford[at]hotmail.com

Thanks
Jay
