If this is for mountaineering, join the American Alpine Club, you get
some coverage with that and I think can pay extra for an upgraded policy.

If you live in Colorado, I think you get some kind of in-state SAR
coverage if you buy a fishing license.

A few climbing mags have ads in them regularly for an insurance carrier
that sells a pretty cheap policy of this type that I think is more
general. Try thumbing through Climbing or Rock & Ice, or the Access Fund
newsletter. Maybe Outside as well?

Lastly if it's for general overseas travel, rather than a specific
activity, talk with a travel agent because you can buy all sorts of
policies to cover the cost of getting airlifted out of the third world
for anything from HACE to "bad tacos". If yours isn't familiar w/it try
adventure travel kinds of agencies or student travel agencies.

Where I live, a medivac is defined as medical evacuation, an air ambulance
if you will. Twenty years ago a medivac to Seattle cost about $6000. I think
it's pushing $20,000 now.

Call your local dive shop. You do not have to be a diver to get the medivac
insurance.
