For a good treatment on this subject, check out some of the Peter
Lynch books, such as "One Up On Wall Street".

Personally, I avoid individual stocks, except for a few that I own
100 shares just to be a stockholder. I much prefer to pick sectors
or indexes.

I keep up on business news and technology in general, and don't spend
much time with an individual selection, perhaps a couple of hours. A
person can get most of the financial information using Yahoo and perhaps
visiting the firm's web site. It would be nice to be able to get more
information, but for small investments, the cost would be prohibitive.

Say, you hear that home building companies are doing well, and want to
pick one for investment. Since there are 13 major home builders, you
can't afford to invest a lot of time investigating each one. So you look
at their financials, relevant news, and spread your investment over the
best 2 or three.

How long do you take before you decide to invest in a given company? How
long do you "follow" the stock? How much research is enough? Thanks.
