Thanks for the reference. Unfortunately, a (potentially time
consuming) trip to the library is "contraindicated" at this time
of year. <g

Thanks for the additional links. As you have correctly implied,
finding the initial quotes for these issues is just the beginning
of my "quest" for information. <grin

Cool! Thanks for that link. (And, lucky me, it looks like their
historical stuff goes back no further than 1998. <g> )

Thanks! Those quotes are close enough (in time) as far as I'm
concerned.

USW Open 45.50 Hi 46.44 lo 45.25 close 45.75. I believe
that on 1-9-98 the two companies were operated as divisions
of US West. See
http://www.qwest.com/about/investor/stock/history.html

I got the quote from Quotemedia.com. You have to have the
symbol for former companies as the lookup feature only
searches current stocks.

check to see if they have the _Daily Stock Price Record_ There are
different editions for the different stock exchanges, but they all go
back that far.

Best I can do for you is 12/31/1997. My records are quarterly prices of my
holdings. Happen to have had those two then.

Communications Group was 45 1/8 and Media Group was 28 7/8. Hope this is
close enough in time. Otherwise try WSJ archives in your local library.

I usually use http://chart.yahoo.com/d? for online historical stock information.
But like you say, it appears yahoo does not retain no longer extant stock
symbols.

Some free online solutions:

==================
US West Communications
==================
US West Communications (1998 stock symbol: USW) merged with and into, and was
renamed, Qwest Corporation (stock symbol: Q) in July, 2000. See
http://www.fcc.gov/wcb/armis/carrier...story/ustr.htm

http://www.qwest.com/about/investor/...ry.html#uswest has some
information about the stock conversions. This info gives some insight but is
probably not directly helpful, as this was a "merge into." If you want this
information free and fairly fast, try going to
http://www.qwest.com/about/investor/contact/index.html and call the toll free
number or use the email form at this site. My experience with investor relations
departments is that they are there precisely to help with this sort of
historical question for settling estates, etc. (among other things).

Or you could Google further. Or, if all else fails, go to a decent public
library and get a decent newspaper from January 9, 1998 (might be on microfiche)
and look up the stock symbol USW. Or the library may have free access to the New
York Times archive or other major papers, so you could do this all on their
computer.

================
US West Media Group
================
US West Media Group (1998 stock symbol: UMG) split from US West and became
Mediaone in 1998. Mediaone subsequently merged into ATT. Go to
http://www.att.com/ir/ and figure out how to contact the investor relations
department and ask for the share price of UMG. Alternatively, back to the public
library.

Default Historical stock quotes

Is anyone aware of an online resource (preferably FREE) that has
historical quotes for companies that are no longer in business? (Most
resources seem to drop this information as soon as the company
disappears from trading.)

Specifically I am looking for the 1/9/98 values of US West
Communications Group and US West Media Group (and/or that latter might
have been known as MediaOne at that time). (Client's mother died on
that date and shares of each were inherited.)

Thanks for any assistance!
