I would like to know which paperwork I need to dig up, > what is "good enough" for the IRS, etc. For the 401k: if you had after-tax contributions that would have been stated on the 1099R you received in the year you rolled it over. For the contributory IRA: in theory you filed Form 8606 with your federal tax retrun in each year you made a nondeductible contribution. That form keeps a running tally of all such contributions so you would just look to the last one filed for your total IRA basis. Since you're asking the question I'll assume that might not have happened. If this is recent you may be able to amend the tax returns and add 8606. If not the IRS will require proof that the contributions are nondeductible; the 8606 is the paper trail that they look to, and if it's not there, the assumption is that your contribution was deductible. Also I think there's a penalty for not filing 8606. I don't know the specifics of how the IRS applies the rules, or whether there's any leniency with late filing (or just one filing showing your total). Good question for an accountant, misc.taxes.moderated, or perhaps the IRS help line. A decent start would be the instructions to form 8606, try www.irs.gov. -Tad |

| I have a couple of IRA accounts. These accouts were formed with aftertax IRA contributions, as well as with 401k rollovers. Many years from now (30+) I will start withdrawing money from those IRAs and I will need paperwork showing how much money in them was already taxed. I would like to know which paperwork I need to dig up, what is "good enough" for the IRS, etc. i |
