There are even muni bonds that are not Federal Tax Free.

Tax on capital gain on sale of munis has never been
tax-free. Original poster was looking for ways that
munis have been tax-free but now are less so.

I don't know if you'd consider this "below-the-radar" example, but one of the
more obvious to me would be using muni-bonds or bond funs within things like
qualified plans.

How about tax on capital gain for munis? 15% > > 0%

Default Municipal bonds "tax-free" status

It used to be that munis were completely tax-free.

Now, their income can affect the tax rate on Social Security benefits
and, depending on the bond or bond fund, can increase the likelihood
of an AMT hit.

Can anyone think of other below-the-radar examples of how muni bond
income can be viewed as no longer completely "tax-free"?
