| I'M SURE YOUR EMPLOYER HAS RULES AGAINST THAT. QUESTION: WHY? IS YOUR 401(K) THAT CRAPPY? IF SO, TRY THIS: CONTRIBUTE JUST ENOUGH TO YOUR 401(k) TO GET 100% OF YOUR COMPANY MATCH, IF YOU CAN, THEN INVEST THE REST OUT OF PLAN IN EITHER A TRADITIONAL OR ROTH IRA, DEPENDING ON YOUR SITUATION. | A fair number of large employers allow in-service rollovers. The big companies in town that allow it are Abbott Labs, GE, and Procter and Gamble. But an even larger number of companies don't allow in-service distributions. As to why, there are MANY reasons. In fact, the only reasons NOT to do it are loan privileges on the 401(k) [generally a terrible place to get to money, anyway] and ERISA protection [which IRAs have, for the most part, on a state level]. Reasons to complete an in-service rollover include: ==> Roth Conversion potential ==> Ability to pay for college without 10% penalty ==> More investment choices ==> Ability to buy and sell individual stocks, bonds ==> Ability to sell covered calls against company stock (and other stock, of course) ==> Better beneficiary designations ==> Ownership of the money (anybody remember Enron?) ==> Ability to set price targets when selling company stock ==> Ability to set stop loss orders on company stock ==> Others "BMS" <mcfarland[at]yahoo.com> wrote in message news:fuaVb.195559$5V2.1074855[at]attbi_s53... - quote - > Depending on your plan's documents, partial in service rollovers are > possible. I'm not answering for the OP, but I can think of a very good> possible. The question is why? reasy why. A couple of jobs back I had a really shitty plan at work. Very limited options as far as choices in where/what to invest in. Couldn't go outside anything offered as part of TheCompanyPlan. Sometimes you might want to go outside TheCompanyPlan to open up more options. |

| Depending on your plan's documents, partial in service rollovers are possible. The question is why? "Steven" <Steven[at]Google.com> wrote in message news:Rc%Ub.471$Lp.452[at]twister.nyc.rr.com... - quote - > Am I allowed to rollover my 401k to an IRA while still at the job? Any > ideas. Thanx. |
