Sounds like the previous employer messed up. They do need to designate a
trustee. Not that that's much help to you. You'll have to prod the
previous employer to get them to fix it. I had a somewhat related situation
one time -- a previous employer still showed me as "employed" two years
after I had left. Because of that, I couldn't do a rollover. Fortunately,
my former HR department got on the ball pretty quick and I was able to roll
it over.

Default How to do a rollover

My wife has a small amount of money in a 401(k) from a previous
employer. She hasn't worked for that employer in over 2 years. The
401k is with AIM Funds. We want to move that money out of AIM and
into her current companies' 401(k) with Fidelity.

Her HR dept sent us some forms to fill out allowing us to desginate
where to send the money, but now we're having a hard time getting AIM
to send us a check. They (AIM) said that we need a "Letter of
Instruction" from the trustee of her previous employer's trustee (who
no longer works there). Then they said since the trustee no longer
works there, her previous employer needs to send a Letter of
Instruction designating a new trustee and it has to be "trustee
medallion guaranteed" and THEN once that's done, the new trustee has
to write the letter of instruction. Seems like a whole bunch of leg
work for us.

Fidelity said just fill out the forms from our HR dept and have AIM
make a check out to us with Fidelity listed as the trustee and mail it
with the form.

Any recommendations?
