| Good Day, I just turned 37 and am not saving for anything in particular. I have set some funds aside for emergencies, a new car, home improvements, etc in short and medium term bonds, loan participation fund, and a Blue Chip Growth fund on top of three months take-home salary in a money market account. I put a little in this Fidelity account each month as well. I just re-financed my house in October and am sitting at 4.875 on a 15 year fixed loan. I have about 30% equity in the home. I also have 11K in student loans at about 3%. Have no credit card debt either. So, practically all my savings goes to two 529 plans, Roth IRA, and 403b. BTW, I have experienced very strange behaviour in posting to this list as well. Some posts have not appeared at all while others have taken several days to appear. Moderator must take vacations, too, I suppose... | List, I am currently putting about $2k/year into each of my wife and my Roth IRA and about 5% of my income into my 403b (amounts to about $3100) and $2400 into 529 plans for each of my two children. The total for all accounts, therefore, is about $11,900. I am wondering what the pros and cons are for the above-mentioned distribution between my 403b and Roth IRA. Given the children and other deductions (along with a not enormous income), our tax bracket is not too painful. My wife is not working outside the home at present. I have always thought it's kind of 6 of one and half a dozen of the other between the 403b and Roth IRA given our situation. I may be way off, however. Are there any obvious advantages to this or another strategy? Thanks much, Mike |
