What Ed said... <g> But, I don't think it would go on the
decedent's final return unless he actually received it prior to
death. Rather, it would go on the 1040 of whoever received it; or
if disclaimed, on the 1041, I suppose...

That's the way it works--the father's minimum distribution
needs to be taken that final year by someone, and then the
measuring life switches the next year.

Default Minimum distribution questin

If son inherits father's IRA, and wishes lifetime income based on his
(son's) life expectancy, he must begin those withdrawals not later
than the December 31 following the year father died.

But if father was receiving minimum distributions, son also must
ensure that the minimum distribution was paid out in year father died.
At least I think so. In fact I assume that it is income in respect to
decedent and includible on deceased's final tax return.

In that year of father's death, I assume that the amount is the
father's minimum distribution. In the next year, the son could switch
to his (son's) life expectancy.

Anybody got a problem with that?
