Well I really don't think Schwab can afford to raise fees as they are pretty
much the highest of all the online brokers now. I think they would lose
many customers, me included.

goodness... not often does one have opportunity to discuss with one
having vision... though lookin' backwards, isn't hindsight always
20/20?... Elizabeth, this guideline to sell when "18 to 22%" growth
achieved, is that of the market as a whole, even though one's investment
may not had realized such a gain?... or is the "18 to 22%" of the
industry segment y'all's investment is in, with its peculiar industry
trends / product life cycles?... or of the particular individual
company, again with differing product life cycles and limitations or
opportunities garnered from their own financial makeup, being different
from all other companies out there, or even within their same industry
segment?... and is it on a calendar basis, from january 1 to december
31st, or from some other span of time, as if fer some reasoning,
everyone's viewpoint resets on some particular day or at some point in
time?... or from the last correction and if sooo, then how much of a
correction would be necessary to suggest a level of support to grow
from, that can be rationalized fer all companies or industry segments,
as the techs corrected back in october of 2002, yet both the behemoths
of the energy segment and the big drug companies corrected in july of
2002, then the smaller integrateds corrected in march 2003 and the
various other industry segments corrected at other points in time too,
thus the market as a whole doesn't correct at the same time, fer when
the techs fell in 2000, the oils moved higher and sooo did the
pharmaceutical drug segment, sooo if ya sold out y'all's tech stocks in
early 2000 ta take the money out of the stock market, y'all missed a
golden opportunity to make money in particularly oil stocks... and
Elizabeth, where does that precise target of "18 to 22%" come from;
what's the basis fer it?... then, Elizabeth, do ya reinvest in another,
lookin' fer yet another "18 to 22%% growth, or do ya sit out on the
sidelines watchin' the world spin by?... myself, i've always felt that
interest rates have a lot ta do with how one invests, such as with what
industry segments, thus i'm wonderin' whether if how interest rates
adjust, would that "18 to 22%" target adjust too?... Elizabeth, how
'bout with such things as an artificial tariff placed by a politician
within an industry, such as with how george did with the steel and pulp
industries, thus fueling their individual company stocks upward; would
that "18 to 22%" target adjust, up or down and if sooo, by how much?...
Elizabeth, how 'bout with inflation, now that congress, adding to the
recent transportaion bill, approved a 4.1% pay raise fer all government
workers, noting that inflation is growing, would that "18 to 22%" target
adjust fer inflation and how much precisely?... Elizabeth, i do
appreciate this opportunity to discuss with one having such vision, fer
i'm just a country redneck, just as plain as one can be...

There was no reason whatsoever NOT to think the market would fall in a big
way. Even that talking heads had been discussing the fact that market prices
were a big bubble and had been for a couple of years. A reasonable person
should be wary of 18-22% growth in a year and perhaps pull in his bullish
horns.

skip... nooo specifics per fee increases per us small investors... yet
when comparing brokers, might suggest lookin' fer possible: account
service fees, maintenance fees on inactive accounts, order handling
fees, higher fees fer a limit or short order, higher fee fer an order
thru either a person or over the telephone versus online or wireless,
higher fees fer lower balances... yet what's more important than a lower
fee, is y'all's order being filled at the best price, fer which my
experience has been that the deep discounter just can't match... and if
y'all are investing half way decently, then the fees are
inconsequential...

frank... as parents, all that we can do is to provide opportunities fer
our children, then it's up to our children to make the most of 'em, fer
we can't be there every step of the way... the school of hard knocks,
where y'all's son lost his investment will certainly be a most valuable
lesson learned fer the rest of his life, in that if ya don't take the
responsibility fer the investing decisions or learning the ropes, but
rather just hand one's money over to another to invest, then buyer
beware... and frank, don't let it get ya down, fer y'all didn't have a
crystal ball suggesting that the market from four years ago might turn
bearish...

About 4 years ago I advised my son to put $5k in an index fund at
Schwab and forget about it. He did.

He didn't read the letter when they raised fees then and they kept
taking money out of his account. He had a negative cash balance of
$200.

He closed the account. I felt he was ripped off.

I know he should have read the letter but....

Default Schwab fees

I've heard rumblings that Scwab is increasing the fees to smallish
investors. Does anyone have any specifics on this?
